This morning I stashed my first rock. I actually took paint and a brush into the woods with me. Found a rock cleaned it off with some snow and painted it right there in the woods. I just need to post clues now the will be off of the www.geocities.com/pugnasties site. Oh the fun!!!

No, not really into hunting rocks. Besides the paint would wear off, burn off in a fire also who's gonna lug rocks to hide. Pretty heavy if you ask me.

Heck, no one said you even had to paint it. Just take a picture of a rock on the trail, post some clues and voila, you've stashed a rock.

Well, I feel that I have not been living up to my responsilbilites here, as a mod. I'd like to take this moment to ask how everyone foundout about rock stashing.
My story: I came across it by accident (very much like my first letterbox - thanks Isoceleces.) I found a rounded, polished rock in the crotch of a tree along a trail and soon found a more - like bread crumbs. Every 'stasher does their thing in their own way, but I feel like this is the original, "old school" method (with the twist of there being multiple stashes on the trail in place of just one.)
Also, I'd like to take a moment to publicly realize the timing of this board may have been bad. It seems that some people thought this was a lead-p by Ryan to some April Fool's joke. Maybe now, with that past, a few more people may join up.
Looking forward to hearing your stories...

I don't care personally for the idea of painting on rocks. The whole idea, I thought, was to get away from all the plastic and other chemicals. The "sport" was from the beginning "green", and gooD for the Earth. Carving/runes/petroglphs/pictograms sound interesting, though.
PS: For those pAying attention - I have been playing with the idea a letterbox around the Spirit Pond Stone found near present daY Popham Beach (Maine.) The stone is a tablet with 10 lines of engraving that may be Norse. Perhaps a carved rock stash would work here. Or maybe a combo LB/RS.

I planted a hybrid rock stash - letterbox the other day and let my Conservation Commission members know (I work for them). All a bunch of noxers and nashers, every one of them. Anyway, my Chairman is now wondering if rock stashing might lead to people collecting rocks out of the parks.
I recommended he find my hybrid, and the literature in the accompanying letterbox might help clarify the issue. I really don't think it should be an issue.

Hey, you know what, if you take the capital letters out of this subject heading and mix them up, you can spell EARTH.
OMG, I REALLY DON'T WANT TO COOK DINNER, DO I????

I am wondering about the best way to list stashes online. There are a couple of small sites out there with clues, but I don't know how much traffic they get. I wanted to do something for Earth Day - either a series, or something involving stashers in many states. Oh - here's an easy find. I'll call it "Third Rock From The Sun." Who gets FF?

Why don't you create your own blog site to list your clues to the stashes, then put a link to it on your AQ profile. Then as you add clues, you can mention them on this board and any others where you might discuss rock stashing, and include the link to your blog site or your profile.
......just a thought.

Great minds think alike!
I read that strip and was thinking of scanning and posting here somehow.
Your link is so much better.
Maybe someday, I'll use rock stashing!

Hiding a letterbox in conjunction with one of these is what I imagined. I wonder if I could "draw" one. I think it would be so danged cool, so would writing the clues...

I am crazy about this idea since we are rock hounds in addition to being letter-boxers. A while back we ended up digging a big hole in the back yard and burying some rocks because we had way too many. Maybe I should reserrect some of them.

Scientists have proven that rock stashing has been around longer than letterboxing.
