SC Treasure Hikers!

Announcing a fun new aspect to letterboxing in South Carolina!!!

Myself and several cohorts have been tossing around ideas about this for a month or so and here’s what we have come up with, solely for fun and enjoyment!

We’d like to introduce the SC Treasure Hiker’s challenge – and it works like this – accumulate 25 “hiking” points and you will be awarded a really cool pathtag, designed by our own amazing graphic designer, Dixie!

How do you accumulate the points, you ask? It’s very simple:

Hike while letterboxing.

See – it’s that simple.

But to make it easier – here are some guidelines.
-You get a point for every mile hiked while letterboxing (finding or planting) – but each hike must be a minimum of one (1) mile in length.
-If you plant a letterbox (or boxes) on a hike, you get one extra point (sorry, one per hike, not one per box planted).
-The start date is March 1, 2009.
-Keep track of your hikes and boxes found. When you get your 25 points, email me (dtandfambly) and the JWalkers with your list, and you will receive your tag!! List can include date, mileage, boxes found.
-All hikes must be done IN the great state of South Carolina (anywhere in SC, mountains to coast and in between) – but ANY letterboxer is eligible – you don’t have to be a resident of SC to participate.
-It’s on the honor system, we trust you!!

Why are we doing this? Just for fun! And to encourage hiking, planting and being in the great outdoors letterboxing in the great state of South Carolina.

A Mountain Challenge by Dixie - you know how Dixie is - she's doing her usual amazing job of rounding up carvers (and hikers) to plant some really neat boxes in her beloved Mountains of WNC - this one will be a bit different than the Treasure Hikers - but just as fun - stay tuned for details!

so, just to clarify... 1 mile round trip or 1 mile in making it 2 miles round trip?

This sounds cool! It may take me awhile but it gives me incentive to get those darn RR boxes out I've been planning for oh, what a year now TD? lol

Uh, Yeah?! I have gone out to replant one on that trail this month but only went to the 2 mile (4 round trip) point. I still have one to plant at Saddle Tunnel (5 mile round trip) if the weather & childcare would co-operate!

One mile round trip is fine. As long as you have hiked one mile total you can count it!

WoooHoooo! I'm in, I just hope that I can get my knee in shape enough to do this before you run out of tags. I have to do it one mile at a time, but I'll get there!

Heck yeah! You better believe I'm getting one in both states!! It may take me awhile, though, since I don't get to SC too often, but I'd be looking for some good 'boxing recommendations from you folks when I do!

Grey- I have recently sustained a knee injury and I know exactly how you feel!! I have been unable to run, or even walk fast for over a month now...injury was first of Jan! Right now, there is no end in sight to this poor injured knee, but one day I hope to do real hikes again. In the meantime, I am looking forward to smelling the roses and enjoying some shorter hikes on flat ground: ) Maybe we can hobble around together for some of these hikes?

Waiting on both now. Unfortunately, due to EIGHT inches of snow, I had to shovel the driveway today which did my cough no good at all.

Plus the kids thought they needed to go sledding.

I'm very tired.

Auntie Grey, you have the right idea, and a great attitude!!!! I have my babies to drag along with me (Foxy Boy is good for some mileage, but Baby Fox lays down on me after about 3 miles..... ;-)) so we won't be early finalists.

When that nephew gets here, put him in a backpack and get on the trails - he can get a tag too!!! It would be beyond cool if he got his tag before his parents did - lol!!

OHH! I'm excited... can't wait till I can get off this mtn full of snow to go hiking!!

We got 7 inches (at least that's what we measured, the neighbor measured 10!)

I'm so jealous. We were promised 5 inches in Columbia, had no school, and NO SNOW. What a waste of a snow day. My children were soooooo sad.

After moving to SC years ago, and coming from "up north", I thought it was hysterical when school let out after 5 flakes of snow were seen. But now, the mere promise of snow gets kids out of school. Gee whiz!

I'm still tryin' to figure out the 2 1/2 hour delay for Anderson this morning......where does the 1/2 hour come from??????

I drove on some back roads about an hour ago and saw some places that still had some ice build up across the whole lane. So I guess that is the reason for the delay ... glad they didn't just close again ... That could mean an extra day on the end of June. As it is, we have lost March 16 & April 13 - which is okay with me.

Hi FFQ!

I was planning on going with you guys tomorrow to the Smurf Village. But, since I couldn't go to the church office yesterday, I will have to go tomorrow. :-( I was really looking forward to getting out and boxing! Lately it seems something always comes up at the last minute, and I always have to change my plans!

Bummer! I wish you could join us! I haven't gone boxing since I found out I was pregnant. Well, actually I did take Dotty to find a couple of local boxes that we had already found, but I haven't found anything new since Oct.
