NC Treasure Hikers!

Announcing a fun new aspect to letterboxing in North Carolina!!!

Myself and several cohorts have been tossing around ideas about this for a month or so and here’s what we have come up with, solely for fun and enjoyment!

We’d like to introduce the NC Treasure Hiker’s challenge – and it works like this – accumulate 25 “hiking” points and you will be awarded a really cool pathtag, designed by our own amazing graphic designer, Dixie! (design coming soon, soon as Dixie gets over The Flu)

How do you accumulate the points, you ask? It’s very simple:

Hike while letterboxing.

See – it’s that simple.

But to make it easier – here are some guidelines.
-You get a point for every mile hiked while letterboxing (finding or planting) – but each hike must be a minimum of one (1) mile in length.
-If you plant a letterbox (or boxes) on a hike, you get one extra point (sorry, one per hike, not one per box planted).
-The start date is March 1, 2009 – all hiking must be done after that date.
-Keep track of your hikes and boxes found. When you get your 25 points, email me, Dixie or Knit Wit with your list, and you will receive your tag!! List should include date, mileage, boxes found.
-All hikes must be done IN the great state of North Carolina (anywhere in NC, mountains to coast and in between) – but ANY letterboxer is eligible – you don’t have to be a resident of NC to participate.
-It’s on the honor system, we trust you!!

Why are we doing this? Just for fun! And to encourage hiking, planting and being in the great outdoors letterboxing in the great state of North Carolina.

Also look for:

SC Treasure Hikers, brought to you by dtandfambly and friends - check the SC board for more details!

A Mountain Challenge by Dixie - you know how Dixie is - she's doing her usual amazing job of rounding up carvers (and hikers) to plant some really neat boxes in her beloved Mountains of WNC - this one will be a bit different than the Treasure Hikers - but just as fun - stay tuned for details!

Separate pathtags will be awarded for each challenge - start your collection today!

Any questions – AQ mail me and wait patiently for a reply.

I think this is a great idea. One of the things I love about letterboxing is that it gets me out exercising and makes hiking even more fun. I also visit several new places I've never been to before. I'll definitely start tracking my miles!

I'm all over this. NC AND SC pathtags-- sooo cool! I may not have been able to acquire 1101010's squished penny, but this is something I can get. Heck, I already record my miles on an online map from my pedometer.

With spring coming, I'm so ready to hike again. So does anyone going to the Dina B LTC thing want to sneak out and log a mile or two in Hickory? Just a quick fix, that's all I need-- maybe over lunch or something. Any box recommendations there?

Mama Wolf,
I can recommend the series of Coffee Mug's up at the Veterans Memorial park in Sawmills. It won't help much toward your "Mileage" but it's a very good series ... awesome stamps and a beautiful place!

Charlie and I have everything local, so aside from getting out to go to lunch, we'll be there at the party most of the day. HOPEFULLY learning a lot and maybe helping some others too !!

Dina B. on at her office.
(no Home Computer for now.....HOPEFULLY just for today and maybe tomorrow.....)

I like the sound of this !!
Charlie and I haven't been doing any long hikes, but even the short ones would add up after a while !!!
I'll start recording mileage !

WOOO HOOOOOOO !!

Hey Dina! I think that is a round trip of about a mile. It really is an excellent series. And, I appreciate you guys planting that so close to me.

I'm working on a message for all the participants about the event today. Look for later this evening. Being without internet connection for a little more than 24 hours when the transformer blew threw me way off schedule with some things.

You got the right idea Dina B!!!! Baby Fox isn't up for long mileage (still got to send her to Wolf Boot Camp ;-)), so I won't be an early finalist. But every mile adds up! Wondering if we should rewrite the rules to including a "whiner bonus" (i.e. if you have to take a whining child along, you get an extra point - lol!!! I'd be done in a month!!).

Dixie claims she won't be getting it, cause she's not a hiker - but I told her that if I have to plant 25 boxes on 25 one mile hikes and personally drag her to each and everyone - she's gonna do it!!! So now that I've said it on the boards, we gotta make it happen!!!

Do you get extra points if you do this while in full Evening Wear? I suspect they would deduct points from me if I did it in Swimwear...

Wassa, dear, if it will get you to come to western NC, I'd allow you to hike in swimwear. I'd just wear a welders mask to protect myself from the glare.

Oh, and I would sooooo go on this hike. I'd have difficulty walking from laughing at Wassa in swimwear and KW in a welder's mask, but it would soooo be worth it. After all, I hiked around Charlotte with a group wearing tin foil hats.

That's got to earn you extra points!

Great idea. West Virginia has a hiking club for the state park system. Log 25 miles and get a hiking stick. ($10 fee which basically covers the stick and shipping) After that 50, 100 etc earns cane shields. They also have a VIPP program which involves collecting state park's VIPP stamps (just the name of the park/forest). Collect so many and you earn a jacket.

Good hiking to all!

Well, I may just have to check that out too. :)

I do plan at being at the LTC event most of the day, but I'll have to stretch my legs a bit so I sure would like to pick up a point or two toward a pathtag at the same time. :)

I'll bring my alcohol inks and some examples.
I'll also bring my carving stuff. If anyone is wanting some assistance in this area, bring what you want carved on some PZ Kut and I'll start you out of you like.
Also, if anyone has a blender pen, bring it. I've been wanting to see how it does an image transfer.

Poor Hale S Angel probably won't make it due to her knee, so it looks like the Jekyll/Hyde cards are out. Once again, you'll be left wondering if we can be seen together. If I don't see her at Gatlinburg I'm really going to wonder!

I do have a bunch of images stamped from the NC box I sent to CT. I'm hoping someone will help me with some ideas on how to put them together.

If anyone wants to do a LTC collaboration I'd carve the stamp for it or a small one to go with one of yours and then we make the card together. Just e-mail me if you are interested in that.

If I don't make it to the Gatlinburg Mini Meet, y'all are in trouble. LOL. Mama Wolf and I will definitely get to meet then. The good lord willing and the creek don't rise! (As our good buddy Tennessee Ernie Ford used to say)

I am so bummed that I'm not going to make it to the LTC making party.

How the heck did you manage to be stealthy in Charlotte wearing a tin foil hat?

I have three or four blender pens but I don't know how to transfer using one. I bring the pens and you bring the knowledge and we will figure it out or at the very least have a bunch of soggy paper. :)

It depends on the blender pen....it needs to be the one that Webfoot sells this one. There is a certain chemical in it that does the transfer. The pens that you get at Hobby Lobby/Michaels to blend pen or pencil won't work.

When you are wearing tin foil hats, you don't NEED to be stealthy - people will automatically avoid you, and consciously look the other way!

Well, stealth had nothing to do with it. It was PROTECTION. We had a visitor from Planet Pre (aka Colorado) -- same place that preboxed is from. We all know that preboxed is an alien so we took the
necessary PREcautions.

Stick around the NC boards long enough and some tall tales just may get spun about ya. ;)

I did learn, though, that absolutely no one said anything to me while I was marching around with tin foil on my head so maybe it wasn't such a bad stealth tactic...

The ones from AC Moore and such work on pens, not transfer. The chemical that need to be in the pen is Xylene (sp). That is the smelly chemical that is you purchase from a paint store in a quart container can strip paint off ANYTHING. I have not seen the pens from Stampin Up. Where do you get it?

Stamping up is a catalog scrapbook company. But, I just checked my pen and it states: acid free * xylene free.

So there we go --- no blender pen transfer with my pens, Mama Wolf. :(
