I went looking for waxed thread to make the logbooks and could not find any... so I made my own! It was soo easy and worked really well. Just take a heavy duty thread like an upholstry thread and cut off the length you need. Then pinch one end between your thumb and a bar of soap. Grab the other end with your other hand and slowly pull the thread sliding it between your thumb and the bar of soap. It is not exactly waxed, but the soap helps it slide easily through the holes in the paper when making the log books. It smells good too... just be careful not to use a scent that might attract critters (although most critters are not attracted by a soapy smell...)
Cheers!

Try looking for waxed thread in the beading section. I usually find it there, rather than in the embroidery or sewing sections.

Lots of places sell waxed thread. They try to confuse you by labeling it Dental Floss.

Do you think dental floss would work?

I've tried using dental floss when making beaded jewelry. I was desperate. I found that it shredded. I started noticing all these little hairs between the beads that started turning into mini-dredlocks. Maybe it was the beads tearing it up, I don't know. Maybe I buy cheap dental floss...
You could always try it. But I would suggest a fairly vigorous testing first. Let us know how it works out!

What about monofilament (ie, fishing line)? That's smooth and won't fray.

I use Royalwood Limited (www.royalwoodltd.com) and have it shipped to me. There's also a store in Branford, CT which has the thread (Northstar would be able to tell you the name), but I've had a lot of trouble finding linen thread in a normal store around here.

I bought fishing line for my school's triangles (the musical instrument), and found that it was too thin and broke easily. Also, if you are doing coptic stitching, you wouldn't be able to see the knots....... They would be too small and probably clear.

A few places that sell notions

But you can just wax your own thread, too!

I use a really small diameter nylon cord. When the ends are burned it seems to work great. The only problem is that I have a huge spool of this stuff but, I can't remember where or when I got it.

Hmm... I wouldn't have expected that. I've got to cut my line with a wicked-sharp knife... or gnaw on it for a few minutes.

Not me! I'm a bit more practical in the binding. I prefer hole-punched pages bound by metal binder rings or loops of Kraft Kord. It lets you open the page all the way for stampin' in and makes it easy to add and remove pages. The covers are where I let my digital design talents go crazy...

This is what I use for my beading now. Fireline, to be precise. I'm guessing it would work for logbooks. I might have to try it out. It is very flexible and you're right, it won't fray. Maybe I'll even add some beads to me logbook... hmmmm... interesting.

First let me say that I've only sewn three books so you can take my advice for what it's worth.
I use dental floss. To get around the floss cutting through the paper I glue a piece of regular printer paper (same thing I use for my log book pages) over the spine of the book. That glues the stitching down and helps re-enforce the binding.
I'll probably come up with a better way with some experience.

I have bought waxed linen for bookbinding on e-bay. You can often find it in every color imaginable for a reasonable price.
