I had a wonderful experience yesterday in Brookdale Cemetery in Dedham. This was definitely not in the wilds of nature.
However, the trek for the box has you going over a hill, and on the way down the hill, I noticed a rather large hole. I bent over to look in, trying to estimate what animal lived there. I didn't see or hear anything but when I looked up, I saw a large red fox with her eyes boring into me, about 50 feet away.
She didn't move, and I didn't move.
I walked a little forward, then down the hill. She didn't move away, but didn't come closer. When I reached the bottom of the hill, she back off, then circled around me jumping from headstone to headstone. (I am not lying!)
I was beginning to think this was the Mama of whatever was in that hole, but the fact that she didn't go away, also concerned me, so I picked up stick and went to the last box.
After I left the last box, she was gone, so I went back, making a careful detour around the hole.
On the way out I saw a man in a wheelchair, who was walking his dog. I asked if he had seen the fox.
He said, oh yes, the fox had four "pups" (I didn't correct him) in the hole on the hill.
This was the second year she had chosen that den.
What a remarkable moment in an urban location

What a nice meeting you had with nature, and so much better than happening into a coyote!

Wow! I am so amazed. I know the man in the wheelchair is often in the cemetery. We actually said hi to him the day we were planting these. But I did not know about the red fox. It really is a lovely place, which I have visited all of my life, many times a year. Thanks for the story! My dad would love to know about it.
