This is the BEST place for camping we have ever been to - you can have your tent RIGHT on the beach. To book your spot visit
http://www.taurangabay.co.nz (they also do cabins). But if you don't want to camp here this box could also done as a day trip from Kerikeri or somewhere else in the Bay of Islands.
This letterbox needs to be found at a low-ish tide. We recommend wearing reef shoes or sandshoes you don't mind getting wet.
Directions
Take the directions on the Tauranga Bay Holiday Park website (given above) to reach their campsite. If not camping, there is a reserve right next to the campground where you can park.
Clue
Go onto the beach and walk to your right. Cross the stream and enter the rocks. You need to make your way around these rocks to the next bay. These are not easy, you will need to use your hands in some points, and could not really be attempted by children under ten. It is worth the effort though, because the bay you are entering is quite likely to be completely empty and it is absolutely beautiful.
Walk along the beach until you see a small flax bush at the top of the beach, sheltering under a large pohutukawa tree on the bank behind. At the rear of this flax you will find this blissful box under a pile of rocks.
