Finding Lookout Below involves a 1 mile hike one way with an elevation gain of 490 ft. according to the guide book. You will pass a grand view and end at a well maintained and popular leanto while hiking along the AT/LT. It is not a simple drive by but is well worth the effort. I highly recomend sturdy hiking boots and a map. Also a whistle, which I always carry, in case of emegency. The AT/LT trail is marked by White Blazes painted on the trees. You should definatly be looking for these. Plan on bringing a lunch and a swim suite. The lunch is for the leanto the swim suite for a nice swimming hole nearby. Happy hunting
Peace and Balance
Getting there
Find Route 103 in central VT, just south of Rutland. The trailhead parking is about 7 miles from the junction of route 7 and 103.
The Clue
Begin at the AT/LT parking area on route 103 in Clarendon, VT Cross 103 carefully as the traffic moves right along here. You should be headed north. The trail uses two stiles to cross barbed wire fence before it joins an old woods road. Very soon the trail leaves the old road and heads very steeply up through a ravine. At the top of the ravine the trail turns right and ascends more gently to a fine view south and west after which it descends to an old woods road. At this junction turn right and head down the road to the Clarendon Shelter.
Finding the LB
Stand facing the leanto look for the stump to your right. Standing at that stump face the back corner of the leanto and take three paces. Look behind the rocks at the base of the leanto. Please note there is some construction debry beneath the leanto which I just found has nails in it. In the future a boy scout troop who maintains the leanto may remove this but in the meantime reach with care. Enjoy your lunch and happy boxing.
If you want another treat after getting back to your car take the AT/LT south for 100 yards you will come to a suspension bridge over Clarendon Gorge (nice view). If weather and conditions permit this is a great swimming hole. A word of warning, if the creek is high this can also be a very dangerous swimming hole. Use good judgment.
