I was passing through Chicago the other way, and had a layover at the Amtrak station. Rode in from Indianapolis and had about two and half hours to kill before catching my train to Seattle. So what did I do? Hide a letterbox, of course. =)
Due to the hustle and bustle of the area and my inability to properly maintain this letterbox, I have chosen NOT to include a logbook. It is a stamp, and only the stamp. If this bothers you, do not look for this box.
To find the stamp, head into the Grand Hall at Union Station. There are four phone banks, one in each corner of the room, with several pay phones at each bank. The stamp is hidden under one of them, held in place with a magnet. The phone number for the phone hiding the letterbox is (312) 648-9110.
If you have a cell phone available, you might be able to find the right phone a bit quicker by trying to call it and listen for which one is ringing. In fact, you could even use one of the payphones and see which of them start ringing when you dial the number. =)
Once you've found the right phone, pretend to make a phone call or something from the phone and feel along the bottom edge of it for the stamp.
Happy trails!
