The City of Rochester plans for the abandoned subway to eventually be [partially?] filled in with dirt. You can access this letterbox until it's location is destroyed (or possibly converted into something else if we're lucky). Perhaps when closing time is near, the box will be relocated near one of the old subway entrances.
I call this an "extreme" letterbox because there is some jumping and climbing involved and you have to enter into a sketchy and kinda scary location. It is a little dangerous as you are close to a ledge that overlooks the river. I don't want to be responsible for any deaths, so don't fall off the edge, okay? It also smells bad (more so at the entrance) and is littered with junk, rubble and who knows what else. On the bright side, it has some awesome graffiti art and is part of Rochester's history (for a limited time only!). As long as you go during the day, no flashlight will be necessary.
HEED THIS ADVICE:
-Do not attempt to bring children or dogs with you.
-Wear sneakers, ones you don't care about.
-Pants, rather than shorts, might be a good idea too.
-You may want to wear gloves to protect yourself from the cooties.
-Do not go alone.
-Do not go in the evening or at night.
-Don't fall into the river.
From downtown, start at Times Square. Diagonally from there is a perfect view of the water. Go down the steps and follow the green railing toward the arches. Go under the railing on your left and walk along the ledge following a large pipe. Keep going until you come across a vertical pipe that leads down into the tunnel. It is not too bad of a jump from here. It is much easier to climb back up because of a piece of metal propped up against the side of the pipe (we found it to be securely placed and in hindsight figured it might have been easier to use it to climb down rather than jump).
Now count the archways with the arch in front of you being #1. Stop at #7. Jump over the ledge to the other side. Walk to the wall. The box is located right under your "chest".
