Description
The 7th Annual Tucson, Arizona, Letterboxers Gathering will take place on Saturday, March 26, 2011, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. All letterboxers are invited. The event will be held in Colossal Cave Mountain Park a little southeast of Tucson, Arizona. We are trying a later month hoping the weather will be better than the last two gatherings! New letterboxes will be placed for this event. Also, bring your own new boxes to plant. This is a large low mountainous area covered with grass and shrubs and cactus and some trees. Lunch will be a potluck. Burritos will be provided and participants are asked to bring other foods to add to the meal. Bring your own drinks. This is a great opportunity to meet new letterboxers, do some exchanges, obtain a few travelers, and of course find new letterboxes. There are dozens of letterboxes in the Tucson area and several near the gathering area to find before, during, and after the event. Camping (no hook-ups) is available in the park. This is at an elevation of about 3,600 ft., so it may be fairly cool in the morning -- dress accordingly!Directions: from I-10 take exit 279, drive north on Colossal Cave Road and follow the park signs for about seven miles to the park entrance which is on Old Spanish Trail. There is an entrance fee of $5.00 per car (up to 6 people); so, you might think about carpooling. The gathering will be at the El Bosquecito Picnic Area. After passing the toll/entrance booth turn left on the second road on the left and drive a short distance to the turnoff on the right for the El Bosquecito Picnic Area. Here is a map of the park showing the location of the picnic area.
There will be a special event stamp for this gathering.
If any of you local people have some firewood, please bring it for the campfire ring.
If any of you local people have some folding chairs, please bring some.
Here is a list of letterboxes that have already been placed in the Colossal Cave Mountain Park/Vail region:
Arizona Trail Cactus
Friendship Hex
Geology 101 Series - Limestone
Old Highway 80
Rincon Valley
Vail History
There will be a special event at the park on this day. It is called "2nd Annual Civilian Conservation Corps Recognition Day". It honors the work of the CCC in Colossal Cave Mountain Park and across the country. Park historians will be on hand to answer questions and share history. Photos, oral histories, camp newspapers, and books will be available.
