Description
Cabin fever is setting in...The snow is starting to melt...
The trails are beginning to reappear...
It's time to start making plans for another great year of letterboxing!
But don't even think about heading outside with clue sheets in hand if you haven't warmed up with a little practice! The Big Leaguers don't do it that way, so why should you?
Ball players get their swings back and the kinks out with some preseason training...
Tupperware hunters get their boots back out and their fingers inky with some Spring Training - Letterbox Style!!
The warm up for the 2009 Season will take place just west of Rochester, NY in North Chili. (It's not the Sunshine State, but it will have to do! And don't let the name Chili fool you - its pronounced with long I sounds: Ch-eye-lie, not 'Chilly' so don't expect it to be too cold!). The fun is set to start Saturday, May 2nd at 10:30.
We'll be getting together at Black Creek Park which is part of the Monroe County Parks system. We've got the Pathfinder Shelter all lined up. There are lots of great trails to walk around (packed with plenty of newly hidden letterboxes), a nice little fishing pond, and one of the "best playgrounds ever" according to our kids.
We'll have something to do for letterboxers of all makes and models:
• Walk the trails and get rid of those wintertime kinks and cramps
• Solve some puzzling and cryptic clues
• Re-orient yourself with your compass
• Practice your cootie-defense skills
• Find kid-friendly boxes carved and planted by kids
• Search for bonus boxes
• Visit with LBers that you have seen in a while
• Exchange with some new LBers that you haven't meet
More details to come in the very near future! Hope to see all of you there!
April 21 Update:
Birds are chirping...
Daffodils are sprouting...
The bugs aren't biting yet...
It is Spring!!
The event is just a couple short weeks away. We've been out to the park a couple of times and found lots of great trails to walk. For the adventure-inclined boxers, there will be a number of NY Letterbox Hiking Challenge series to complete. There will also be a few other series that are very close to the shelter, and plenty of traveling event stamps and personal travelers too!
Be sure to dress prepared for the weather; there is a bathroom nearby where you can change if you need to. And be sure to bring boots, or something that you don't care to if they get muddy. Some of the trails have standing water on them still, and there are lots of soft muddy areas. So you might even want to change after the event!
Cluebooks for these boxes will be provided at the event. This will ensure that those attending get the first crack at 'em! By Sunday morning, the clues will be posted on AQ to allow others to search for them, and for those at the event to log their finds.
Itinerary:
Expect to meet at the shelter around 10:30. We can meet, greet, visit and exchange while we're there. Plan on lunch around 11:15; be sure to sign up for the potluck! For those bringing young kids, expect them to want to go over to the playground that is just the right distance away from our pavilion. Then around noontime, or whenever really, out onto the trails with full bellies. Come back to the shelter when you've had enough and are ready to call it a day. It should be a great time and we're looking forward to seeing all of you there!
April 30 Update:
Our event is almost onto AQ's homepage! Only two days to go!
Here are some last minute reminders:
• Bring boots to hike in, or something you don't care about getting muddy... there's are some really wet patches out there
• Due to the ground conditions, not all trails are going to be stroller friendly
• The weather forecast calls for a high of 60 degrees with a 20% chance of rain. There is always a breeze here... so be prepared
• There are electrical outlets in the shelter... so if you have to plug in, you should be good to go
• Don't forget to print out the Event Checklist and Personal Travelers list from the event page. We'll have the other clue sheets, but not the ones for the PTs
And one more request. Mocchi was wondering if there were going to be any Letterbox Trading Cards at this event. LTCs are certainly welcome here, so bring if you want to. If you're interested, contact Mocchi here on AQ mail with any questions.
Looking forward to seeing all of you and having a great time!!
