Steampunk Smiles Everyone!

Description

Steampunk is…

“It’s sort of Victorian-industrial, but with more whimsy and fewer orphans.” - Caitlin Kittredge

“Steampunk is what happens when goths discover brown.” – Jess Nevins

“Steampunk is a Revisited Design of the Industrial Revolution”- David of Acrodrome

“To me, it’s essentially the intersection of technology and romance.” – Jake von Slatt

“Steampunk is an invasion of the past mixed with rebellion of the present” – John Wilson

"Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction that often explores an alternate future and that borrows from many characteristics of Victorian England in terms of visual style, social strata, and cultural beliefs. However, what characterizes steampunk is the presence of advanced technology in a retro-futurist, “road not taken” context. Airships, clockwork machinery, and steam-powered mechanical devices all play large roles in steampunk society. The “punk” aspect references the plotlines of these stories, often revolving around elements of rebellion and social change. Steampunk has risen in popularity in novelized fiction, comics, videogames, culture, fashion, and film." – Andrew Shaner

“Steampunk is when the mind tries to escape from modern reality, falls in love with the culture and aesthetic of a time lost, and decides to have more fun with it than the actual Victorians ever did.” – Leyomi

“Steampunk has a philosophical angle as well, which is somewhat of a combination between the maker ideals of creativity and self-reliance and the Victorian optimistic view of the future.” – Unknown

“Ancient dusty inner workings begging to be fixed anew. A wonderful and unique Letterboxing event just waiting for you.” – Blackvelvetrav

Oct 1, 2011: Steampunk Spectacular – The Countdown is On!
Steampunk…What’s that?!

Generally, Steampunk is a fashion, design, and popular-culture phenomenon that combines romance and technology. Among its many influences are futurism, time travel, and the Victorian Age. These seemingly disparate facets combine into a resulting look that might be called “Mad Max Meets Jane Austen.”

In 1987, K.W. Jeter, author of Morlock Night, coined the term “Steampunk” to describe a genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that later came to describe an entire artistic and cultural movement.

Special Event Notes: Some of the Steampunk Images are very small (one inch or less) and some of them are very large (over 6 inches). Please be prepared with paper or a large logbook that can accommodate the variety of sizes you will encounter. There will be no ink provided in the boxes so please be sure to carry your favorite ink and/or colored pens to the event.

Oct 8, 2011: Steampunk Wardrobe
Themed costumes and dressing up are at the very heart of the Steampunk life. To come up with their one-of-a-kind creations, Steampunk artists turn to Victorian-era fashion to create their foundation and then build and embellish from there, adding Steampunk influences from fiction, film, and animation. The goal is to marry the sensibilities of Emily Bronte to the all out rebellious attitude of a time-traveling Johnny Rotten.

Although some people are likely to wear Steampunk-influences clothing every day, costumes are more over-the-top attire, often worn only at Steampunk, anime, or cosplay conventions. Costumes are designed and constructed specifically to evoke a character or vision from a retro-futuristic world.

Special Event Notes: Costumes are encouraged but not necessary to attend. The extended weather forecast for October 15th is mostly sunny with a high of 64 degrees. Be sure your clothing elements include layers for warmth (as well as fashion). You will be wandering on flat trails that are paved and unpaved. Be sure your shoes are appropriate or bring extra’s to change into. Some of the boxes will be planted off trail and may include you time traveling into the brush. To help discover the hiding spot of these boxes be sure to bring your compass for accurate navigation. Although there is only a 20% chance of rain a parasol is never out of fashion even for sky pirates.

Oct 10, 2011: Topping It Off
One of the most important features of a Steampunk costume is what's worn on the head. A top hat, leather flight helmet, curved bowler, straw boater, Arctic flap hat, pith helmet, Sherlock Holmes-style deerstalker, pirates bandana, wool newsboy cap or embellished tam. Each of these is the height of Victorian style. The list for Steampunk headwear doesn't end with what was stylish 150 years ago, however, nor is it relegated to only hats. Many Steampunk costume experts top themselves off with braids, feathers, tubing, wire, or yarn to add a bit of Max Max Beyond Thunderdome punk style to the mix.

Special Event Notes: Are you prepared for untold adventure, risky experimentation, hidden dangers, fantastical monsters and outrageous inventions? If you are ready for the challenge be sure to get your sea legs ready for exploring. You never know what adventures await in the murky depths of Eagle Island Lake! Be prepared on your voyage by watching out for mechanical Sea Creatures!
