Description
Welcome to Coaster Boaster! Our theme? Beer Coasters of course!Numerous series of stamps will be planted for this event from carvers from all over the country. We're looking at roughly FIFTY new stamps!
Whether you're looking to box or just hang out and eat/drink, you've come to the right place!
The meet up:
The meet-n-greet will be held at Santora's Pizza Pub & Grill with 42 beers on tap and a ten page food menu, reasonably priced and including a children's menu.
They will allow us separate checks and serve "flights of beer" so you may sample several small and very unique drafts. When you sign up, it is for the food/drinks portion of the event so we know how many to expect and for the restaurant to staff accordingly. We have reserved the Banquet Room for this event so come hungry and thirsty!
The boxing portion:
The boxing portion of the event will take place 25 minutes away in beautiful Darien Lake State Park in Genesee County. This Park is relatively void of boxes and has many different conservation trails. It is bordered by Broadway (Rt. 20), S. Alleghany Rd. (Rt.77), Harlow and Sumner Roads. There will be three entrances used for boxing. Please print out and familiarize yourself with the Park Trail Map. Because this event is set up "backwards", you will have to print out your own clues for the Coaster Boaster series (if you don't have an internet accessible phone). They will be available no later than Friday, April 27th.
Accomodations:
We encourage all out of town visitors to come to Western New York on Saturday, April 28 and spend the night. The event time has been designed with you in mind so you can return home at a decent hour. There are numerous locals who can assist you in helping plan out a route for Saturday (if you chose to do more than the Coaster Boaster! series) and make your visit a most enjoyable one. A listing of nearby hotels, all of which are directly off exit 49 (Depew exit on to Transit Road) are as follows:
MICROTEL
MOTEL 6
CLARION
RED ROOF INN
ECONO LODGE
HOSPITALITY INN
GARDEN PALACE $$$
Must haves:
If you've never purchased a set of markers, you're going to want to do it prior to Coaster Boaster.
All event boxes are welcome
Cheers! GBS and TF
Apr 5, 2012: Coaster Boaster! Event
Howdy Attendees!
I list of nearby hotels has now been added to the event page.
Please remember that all event boxes are welcomed so don't forget to add yours through the event listing page.
We've had to revert back to the original time for the event (3 p.m. - 7 p.m.) due to a conflict in having the banquet room for the entire day.
Please don't let this deter you if you are coming from out of town.
TF and I have planted 1/4 of the boxes already and are looking at roughly a total of FIFTY stamps. We have definitely encountered muddy and swampy terrain with one area requiring either muck boots or someone to take you piggy back through water over ankle height. Please do not wear your Sunday best and make sure to bring a change of shoes/pants if you're boxing before the event. The bottom 6" of my OLD jeans were covered in mud when traversing one section.
We've already encountered some pretty cool stuff while planting. If you're into photography, a camera is highly recommended.
We will make every attempt to insure our clues are "no frills" and concise so you are not carrying 45 pages of paper.
We did not encounter any problems with "no signal" if using a phone to access AQ.
Only a few more weeks! We're excited. We hope you are too :)
Apr 23, 2012: Coming up quick!
Hi everyone!
With Coaster Boaster! just around the corner, there's a few weather announcements to be made. Although we were given a good scare in the last day, there is no need to worry. The major impact is going to be muddy trails. Both Saturday and Sunday look to be a high around 50* (at Darien) with Saturday being the sunnier of the two days.
Wouldn't hurt to throw some dollar store rain poncho's in your bag and proper footwear is imperative. Anything rubber or waterproof is best, and tuck those pants in your boots! Please make sure to bring a pair of shoes to change into before the event if you'll be boxing prior to attending as the banquet room is carpeted.
Best to put your clues (will be posted some time on Friday) in a large gallon sized zip-lock bag just to be on the safe side. Don't forget to print out the trail map as well. You will be using the Rt. 20 (Broadway) and Summer Rd. trailheads. There are five series covering a total of eight and a half miles of hiking.
It might be best to know ahead of time, that the first series will take you across a narrow 20' metal foot bridge (elevation 15') with no guardrails.
Please take this into consideration if you have young children.
There is virtually no place to eat around Darien Lake State Park. If you're up and out early, throw some fruit or snacks in your bag to hold you over until the event at Santora's. The menu is quite extensive; Gourmet Pizza, flatbread, wrappini, salads, Homemade pasta dishes with five different sauces to choose from, burgers, calzones, etc.
Beer connoisseurs, you'll be in for a real treat. Happy hour starts at 4 p.m. and most specialty draft beer is $3.25. With forty-two to pick from, surely there is something for everyone.
I will be bringing a few games for the kids to play - a deck of cards, monopoly, lego's, but I don't have any girlie stuff. Feel free to bring anything you think the kids might enjoy that will occupy them. They can have their own table and do whatever it is that kids do :)
If you've never attended an event before, here are some helpful hints so you know what to expect.
We'll send out another notice when the clues are listed.
Looking forward to seeing everyone!
GBS & TF
Apr 27, 2012: Clues are up!
We're good to go folks!
You'll see the listings in most recent boxes planted. There are three series under turkey feathers and two under mine.
Because this is a colored marker series, it might help to throw some wet paper towels in a ziplock to wipe stamps off before you color.
It looks like a thin pair of gloves will help keep your fingers toasty. There is no RAI_ in the forecast <no jinx>.
See you on the trails and at Santora's on Sunday.
Have fun everyone!
