Description

It has been ten years since the Santa Fe letterboxers hosted the SPOOKtacular event. In honor of the decade, we are resurrecting the event on Saturday, September 23. We will meet at ArnoldZiffel and Agent 86’s house on the southwest side of Santa Fe (more specific info on that later) and will have boxes planted along the more-than-four miles of city trails behind the house. We will provide a map of those trails, along with box locations and other information, such as the locations of benches and trashcans. We will also provide lists and maps for boxing areas in various areas around Santa Fe.

Around noon, Agent 86 will be grilling hot dogs, burgers, and veggie burgers. We will also have buns, condiments, and paper plates and napkins. Please bring something to share: a salad, side dish, chips, or dessert, as well as your desired beverage.

Even though we are within city limits, be aware that cell phone service is limited. There are even a couple of places along the trails that receive no cell service at all.

Friendly dogs are welcome. Monty dog will be in residence. He gets along with other dogs.

Weather at the end of September can be cool or can be quite warm. It may be cool in the morning and hot in the afternoon, so you will want to dress in layers. Don’t forget the sunscreen.

There will be event stamps and some HIPS stamps. Feel free to plant your own boxes along the trails on Friday night or Saturday morning. I have a printer, if you need to print clues that are planted at the last minute. If you want to mail a box to me so I can plant it ahead of time, contact me (ArnoldZiffel) through AQ mail.

Campsites are available at Hyde Memorial State Park and at Black Canyon Campground (USFS), both on Hyde Park Road. There are a number of hotels along Cerrillos Road (closest to the event) and downtown.
More detailed information will be available as we get closer to the date of the event.

Special Note:
The Santa Fe Letterboxers have created maps and lists for boxes in the Santa Fe Area and boxes in the Alphabetical New Mexico Series. You can access these by going to Maps and Lists for Santa Fe Area and Alphabetical New Mexico Series. Please be advised that we don’t get to check up on them on a regular basis. So, make sure you look at the clues to see if the box is ACTIVE, UNKNOWN, UNAVAILABLE, or RETIRED.

Another Note:
We have created a trail map of the area where the event will be held. You can download a copy at Santa Fe SPOOKtacular Letterboxing Event Resurrected Map. The boxes listed on the map are boxes that have been planted in the area and are permanent. We may or may not add the new boxes planted juat for the event. NOTE: I have updated the map for the event to include existing boxes and the new boxes planted for the event.
